When SGT Albert Smith's letter to his former Epworth Children's Home roommate made news in South Carolina, no one expected it to reach the Netherlands where Albert is buried. But thanks to a dedicated team of librarians, the story traveled halfway across the world.

In partnership with the Faces of Margraten project, our librarians are researching 32 soldiers from South Carolina who have little to no information available about their lives. We were fortunate to connect with the family of SGT Clarence W. Cox from Abbeville.

The Discus team spent the last several weeks packing more than 1,400 boxes to send to South Carolina schools. The packages are full of your favorite Discus swag including pencils, pens, sticky notes, microfiber cloths, and much more. We know that schools are excited to receive the boxes, but please be patient as it takes time to mail such a large volume of packages. We are delighted to offer South Carolinians free access to TumbleMath via Discus - South Carolina’s Virtual Library. This comprehensive collection of picture books uses animation and narration to help students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 learn math. Lesson plans, quizzes, and fun activities help illustrate concepts including counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, and fractions.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. Be sure to sign up for a South Carolina State Library card and check with your local South Carolina public library about getting a library card today.

The South Carolina Digital State Documents Depository provides access to publications produced by state agencies and state-supported academic institutions. These publications provide citizens with crucial information about state government, including statistics, annual accountability reports, and data on a wide variety of topics related to the state.

Want to know more about our Check Out SC State Park Backpack Program? Check Out SC is a partnership between the SC State Library and SC Parks, Recreation and Tourism (SCPRT). The purpose of this project is to encourage patrons to take advantage of public spaces, specifically state parks, and reap the benefits of spending more time outdoors.

The South Carolina State Library continues to adapt services to meet the changing needs of its patrons during the COVID-19 pandemic. Curbside pickup will be available beginning Wednesday, August 19, 2020.
