We have a great career opportunity available for a State Government Documents Librarian in our Columbia, South Carolina headquarters.
Under the general supervision of the Director of Digitization and Government Documents, the State Government Documents Librarian performs all necessary duties to maintain the State Library physical State Documents Depository Collection. This position is responsible for collection, receiving, and processing of incoming state government publications and coordinates with and promotes the statewide State Document Depository System.
The candidate must have excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact courteously and effectively with internal and external customers. They should have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines under limited supervision. They must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with all levels of staff and management.
- Receive and process print state document materials received through the State Depository program and maintain records of all items received for organizational and statistical purposes. Manage holding records of state documents requiring original cataloging and MARC copy cataloging. Perform outreach to state agencies and serve as liaison to agencies to collect both new and historical state publications. Provide content to Communications department highlighting state documents collection and create displays on public floor.
- Accurately performs copy cataloging and original MARC cataloging for print state documents through OCLC and the SCLENDS online catalog and adds holdings records in catalog for state documents. Perform regular collection maintenance: shifting, reorganization, and housing of items.
- Serve as coordinator and main point of contact for state document depository libraries, including providing Marc files of newly added documents into the digital repository. Create content and maintain SC State Documents Depository resource guide on website; maintain the State Documents Collaborative Group Constant Contact list and send updates and relevant information to the other State Depository Libraries.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in library science, information science or related field and experience in library systems and operations.
- Ability to lift and move materials, bending and reaching to perform regular collection maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
- A master’s degree in library science form an ALA accredited college or university.
- 3 years professional library experience.
- Knowledge of MARC and RDA cataloging.
- Experience working with government documents.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
Additional Comments
- Work takes place in an office environment. Overnight travel is not expected for this position, however may be occasionally necessary. Some local travel is expected. Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
