South Carolina has a rich literary heritage full of celebrated authors and significant contributors to the literary field.

The South Carolina State Library’s Center for the Book needs your help identifying key South Carolina Literary Landmarks from around our state. Location suggestions will be accepted year-round, and nominations will go to the South Carolina State Library Board for voting. The State Library will designate the new landmarks with a plaque and include them in future traveling exhibits.
Nominations should be for a physical place located in South Carolina that is linked to an author with significant ties to South Carolina. In addition, please provide an address or description of the physical place to be commemorated.
The location should be linked to a literary figure who meets the following criteria:
- was born, raised, and/or spent a significant portion of their life in South Carolina, AND
- is/was a winner of a prestigious award for writing (e.g., the Pulitzer Prize), OR
- wrote a very famous work/series, OR
- is/was the editor of a famous author or piece of work.
Current landmarks include the following sites:
- The James Dickey Library at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC
- The Pat Conroy Literary Center in Beaufort, SC
- The Dr. Benjamin E. Mays Historic Site in Greenwood, SC
- The Harvin-Clarendon County Public Library in Manning, SC to honor author Peggy Parish (creator of the Amelia Bedelia series)
- The Arthenia J. Bates Millican Home in Sumter, SC to honor poet, essayist, writer, and educator Bates Millican
