National Native American Heritage Month Display

November is National Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich history of Native American communities. As part of the SC250 commemoration, the South Carolina State Library is highlighting historical materials from its South Carolina Collection that explore the experiences of Indigenous peoples in the region, with recognition that South Carolina’s history did not begin with statehood in 1788. Although some resources reflect outdated terminology and perspectives, they remain valuable for understanding how native communities have been documented and represented over time. Displayed respectfully and for educational purposes, these documents invite reflection on how historical narratives have shaped our understanding of Indigenous heritage.
