Established in 1978, the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium was created to manage and administer the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Sea Grant College Program for South Carolina and adjacent regions that share a common heritage. The agency’s purpose is to generate and provide science-based information on issues and opportunities to improve the social and economic well-being of coastal residents and to ensure the optimal use and conservation of marine and coastal natural resources.

The Gullah/Geechee Nation, Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce, and Gullah Preservation Society, in partnership with the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium, established the Gullah/Geechee CREATE program to work with Gullah Geechee and Black artists in the Palmetto State to upcycle marine debris into works of art. These artworks showcase the culmination of these efforts – using materials collected at clean-up events to evoke a sense of environmental stewardship, marine education, and maritime cultural heritage. Meet the 11 artists highlighted in showcases across the Lowcountry earlier this year, featured in the Gullah/Geechee CREATE Coastal Art Showcases 2026 catalog.

The complete list of April electronic South Carolina state publications is now available.
