Job Description

PASCAL is a consortium of 56 college and university libraries housed within the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. PASCAL provides resources and support for academic libraries.   The consortium fosters cooperation on a broad range of issues including shared licensing of electronic resources, universal borrowing, collaborative collection management, affordable learning and library systems support.  

The Shared Library Services Platform (SLSP) team promotes development of general system support expertise through considerable cross-training. The SLSP is an Ex Libris Alma and Primo VE implementation for 55 academic libraries.  The team also supports a single-sign on solution, OpenAthens, for 44 of its member libraries. Working in close cooperation with other members of the SLSP Team, the incumbent will identify and develop technical expertise within the system in order to support the team's mission to provide effective and efficient support to member libraries. The SLSP team coordinates its activities through a variety of external stakeholders via the consortia's Collaborative Management Framework. The team also collaborates with PASCAL's Content & Services Team to support PASCAL's robust collection of core electronic resources, rapid delivery services, an affordable learning initiative, and collaborative collections. The job duties for this position will include, but are not limited to the following: 

     Provides front-line user technical support for SLSP systems to library staff at member institutions using a variety of tools including managing tickets via help desk software.

    Analyzes, documents, and resolves system issues, and coordinates responses with the vendor, PASCAL staff, and the libraries.

    Provides training in functional areas of the SLSP so that member library staff can maximize their effectiveness using the system.

    Supports the release of software updates including testing and evaluation of new functionality and options available in the release.

    Assists in SLSP system management, including implementation of ancillary tools (3rd party software, APIs, etc.) as needed to better support library operations.

    In conjunction with member librarians, researches, evaluates, and makes recommendations relating to external third-party products that may provide enhanced functionality or services based on the shared system.

    Develops expertise to serve as a functional expert and provide leadership in one or more system functional areas. These may include discovery access and design, fulfillment, metadata, electronic resource management, system administration, etc.

    Participates in a project management-based approach to advance the adoption and use of the system, particularly in pursuit of objectives as outlined in PASCAL's strategic agenda.

    Actively participates in and represents PASCAL in various internal and external working groups, as appropriate.

    Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum and Additional Requirements

    A Masters’ Degree in Library Science from ALA-accredited institution.

    Additional Requirements: 

        Ability to work independently and exercise initiative.  

        Ability to communicate effectively.

        Ability to coordinate work with others in a team environment.

        Excellent Oral and Written Communication skills

        Experience or Education indicating a capability to provide technical support and training as a member of a team. 

        Position may require overnight travel

        Position may require employee to work evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

    Experience or education that demonstrates a capability to develop the skills required to provide front-line technical support for Alma and Primo VE. This could include experience or education in the following areas:

        Academic or research library environments

        Various areas of library operations including systems, fulfillment, discovery, metadata, etc.

        Implementing, managing, and troubleshooting information technology systems, including training and support.

        Developing and maintaining websites

    People interested in this position may find one or more of the following skills and qualifications beneficial to performing the responsibilities of this role. These skills and qualifications are not required.

        Experience supporting Alma and/or Primo VE or other library system platforms/discovery services.

        An understanding of metadata tools and standards, such as RDA, Dublin Core, MARC.

        Familiarity with software development processes and tools.

        Familiarity with the Springshare product suite.

        Familiarity with academic library consortia.
