July is National Parks and Recreation Month, a time to celebrate the natural beauty and recreational opportunities found in South Carolina’s parks.

The National Park Service (NPS) was founded in 1916 under President Woodrow Wilson. The NPS was initially tasked with preserving and managing the nation's growing number of national parks and monuments.
