Friends of the York County Library Honors Volunteers

York County Volunteers

The Friends of the York County Library recently announced that Martha Ferguson is the 2014 recipient of the Joann W. McMaster Volunteer of the Year award at a reception to honor Friends of the Library volunteers. The award is named in honor of Joann McMaster, who helped found the Friends of the York County Library organization in 1975 and served as its first president.

A Friends of the Library volunteer for several years, Martha has served as Friends of the Library president, coordinates volunteers for book sales and other events, and volunteers on a weekly basis at the library. She has logged over 250 volunteer hours in 2014.

Martha and her husband, Harry, have been Fort Mill residents for 30 years. They have 2 adult sons, Adam and Brent, and 5 granddaughters. She also has 3 stepchildren.

Martha has most enjoyed meeting new friends through her involvement with the Friends of the Library, especially her association with other book lovers. She likes the exchange of information about authors and books that others are reading. She is also an active volunteer with the Fort Mill Community Playhouse.

The Friends also recognized nearly 100 volunteers, who donated over 3,000 hours on behalf of York County Libraries. The Friends of the Library hold used book sales and other events to raise funds for library programs. They are the major sponsor of the summer reading programs for all ages and other library needs not provided for in the library budget.
