Teaching children to read can be a challenge. This institute, hosted by Richland Library and USC's School of Library and Information Science and Department of Education will show you how.
It will cover essentials like:
• Phonemic awareness concepts and activities
• Alphabetic principles
• Early strategies with K-1 nonreaders
• Vocabulary development, comprehension and concepts about print
• Learning assessment
• Access to print materials
• Use of illustrations in the teaching of reading
• Choosing culturally relevant texts for children
• Connections to common core standards
The institute is intended for public and school librarians, tutors, and teachers. While not required, participants are strongly encouraged to tutor a child while in the program.
