Science of Reading Summer Institute 2013

Teaching children to read can be a challenge. This institute, hosted by Richland Library and USC's School of Library and Information Science and Department of Education will show you how.

It will cover essentials like:
• Phonemic awareness concepts and activities
• Alphabetic principles
• Early strategies with K-1 nonreaders
• Vocabulary development, comprehension and concepts about print
• Learning assessment
• Access to print materials
• Use of illustrations in the teaching of reading
• Choosing culturally relevant texts for children
• Connections to common core standards

The institute is intended for public and school librarians, tutors, and teachers. While not required, participants are strongly encouraged to tutor a child while in the program.

All sessions will be held at the Richland Library Main (1431 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201) from 5:30 -- 8:00 pm. Participants are expected to attend all sessions.
