Governor McMaster visits John de la Howe School in McCormick County

This month Governor Henry McMaster signed a bill making the South Carolina Governor’s School for Agriculture at John de la Howe the first of its kind in the United States. The school, which sits on 1,310 acres of farmland in McCormick County, is a public residential high school for students in grades 10 through 12.

The State Library awarded a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) impact grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to help fund a partnership between the McCormick County Library and the John de la Howe School.  The money will help offer students a comprehensive collection of materials and lessons with educational speakers from agribusiness, forestry, land management, and food science. Governor McMaster viewed some of the resources during his visit to McCormick on December 8.

The Governor’s School for Agriculture is South Carolina’s third Governor’s school, joining the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities and the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics.
