Reader Advisory Assistant

Job Description

We have a great career opportunity available for a Reader Advisory Assistant in our Columbia, South Carolina headquarters. 

Under general supervision of the TBS Director, assists with reader advisory/reference services to persons unable to use standard print material due to disabilities, utilizing considerable library knowledge and basic library skills in the area of reader advisor tasks and patron service.  Serves as designated assistant to all other TBS initiatives and programs, including but not limited to the Assistive Technology Petting Zoo, TBS and BARD presentations at public libraries and other community stakeholders. Serves as backup to TBS technical services through machine processing and repairs, fulfilling patron materials requests, and mailroom assistance. 

Job Responsibilities
  • Serves as support to TBS Reader Advisors by assisting patrons by phone or in person in ordering materials.
  •  Processes TBS applications and sets up KLAS accounts. 
  •  Updates patron records, answers questions, and troubleshoots patron problems as needed.
  • Assists with TBS information and awareness initiatives such as information packet mailings and delivery, contacting local and statewide community stakeholders, and representing TBS at exhibit booths, conferences, and other educational and awareness events.
  • Serves as support for the Assistive Technology Petting Zoo and other outreach initiatives. 
  • Assists SC public libraries in understanding appropriate assistive technology and TBS user options for their patrons.  
  • Visits libraries, agencies, and individuals to display and demonstrate various equipment.  
  • Assists with cataloging duties and all other bibliographic record-keeping tasks in KLAS and any other related systems. 
  •  Participates in collection development. 
  • Serves as liaison and/or backup staffer for various departmental tasks and activities. Performs other duties as assigned. 
Qualifications

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A high school diploma and relevant library experience.  A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of library experience working with patrons.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact courteously and effectively with internal and external customers. 
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines under limited supervision. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with all levels of staff and management.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
