The South Carolina State Library is seeking a creative, detail-oriented person with excellent customer service skills for the Library Services Director. This position oversees the Library Services Department, comprised of library staff responsible for services and programs related to library patron services. Responsible for managing the front-line services provided by the State Library such as circulation, research and reference assistance, and interlibrary loan, along with some field and partnership work with other state agencies. Assists with data collection and statistical information for agency reporting.
The candidate must have knowledge of principles and practices. Ability to manage project activities through the supervision of staff. Ability to develop, implement, and monitor project budgets. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively utilize current and emerging online resources and technology. Ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities in and organized manner and establish priorities. Strong attention to detail. Provide leadership, project management, and oversight of budgeting, coordinating programs, special projects, library partnerships, and personnel. The position supervises multiple staff and has independence and discretion on management, decision making, and administrative matters. Ability to work under limited direction, to take initiative and use independent judgement.
- Ensures the performance, management, and development of the workforce to utilize its full potential in accomplishing the organization's overall mission, strategy, and agency goals.
- Supervises employees by applying appropriate management principles according to SCSL policy and procedures, completing EPMS timely and accurately, and monitoring employee progress towards goal attainment.
- Communicates expectations and provides feedback to assist employee with performance improvement, professional development, and skills/competency development.
- Coaches and develops communication with staff.
- Coordinates and implements public services to library patrons including but not limited to circulation, interlibrary loan, ready reference, and research assistance.
- Responsible for promotion and outreach activities related to the library services and resources offered by the South Carolina State Library, including but not limited to state government agencies, state government employees, underserved populations, and the public.
- Develops, monitors, and manages departmental budget.
- Serves on the State Library’s Leadership Team, contributing to the development of the organization’s goals and objectives.
- Prepares monthly reports providing relevant statistics to administration relating to the library’s collection and provision of library public services.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- A Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited college or university and a minimum of five (5) years of professional library experience.
- At least two (2) years of supervisory experience.
- Experience providing customer service to library patrons.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of public library administration and current library organization, procedures, and services.
- Ability to coordinate, plan, and direct work of professional and technical staff
- Communicate effectively (orally and in writing), including public speaking to groups large and small.
- Strong writing skills required.
- Ability to prepare and deliver presentations to various audiences and visual presentations.
- Organize and present through reports, familiarity with data collection and using statistics.
- Ability to network and establish partnerships.
- Strong management and analytical skills.
