State Library Partners with DEW to Educate Library Staff

The South Carolina State Library has recently partnered with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) to educate library staff members across the state about upcoming county-level employment office changes. A free webinar titled, SC DEW Self Service Unemployment Benefits, will be offered for library staff members Wednesday, May 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Library staff members in South Carolina may register via the State Library's website calendar of events at www.statelibrary.sc.gov.

The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce is currently transforming the way Unemployment Insurance (UI) services are delivered to customers throughout the state. This new delivery model relies on technology and innovative approaches to provide enhanced services to South Carolinians while absorbing funding cuts.

To increase efficiency and continue to provide the support UI claimants' need, the department is establishing regional UI claims processing call centers. These centers will provide both telephone support and claims processing support to customers statewide.

"Ultimately, these changes enable our customers to take advantage of services more quickly, efficiently and at times most convenient to them," said John L. Finan, DEW administrator. "A variety of factors dictated that we change the way we do business. DEW is both pleased and excited about working together to provide connection points to claimants that maximizes technology in order to best assist South Carolinians find the right job or employee."

"The exceptional level of collaboration between the South Carolina State Library system and DEW is making this service delivery upgrade run smoothly," Finan said. "The continued cooperation among the partners will ensure that as our state continues along the path of economic recovery, together our organizations will meet the needs of the workforce and business community in the most efficient manner possible."

"We truly appreciate the dedication many of our community libraries have already shown in partnering with DEW and other workforce development organizations to provide services to jobseekers, and we would like to build on and expand those partnerships in the coming months," said Erica VonNessen, DEW Assistant Executive Director for Unemployment Insurance.
