Chartered by the South Carolina General Assembly in 2019, the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in South Carolina by promoting the history, people, principles, places and events that contributed to our state’s pivotal role in the fight for independence.

By March of 1781, British forces in South Carolina had suffered recent defeats at the Battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens. The previous winter, Francis Marion and his militia established a secluded encampment in the Pee Dee Swamp near Snow’s Island. In March 1781, British forces, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Welbore Ellis Doyle, raided Marion’s encampment while most of Marion’s men were fighting another British force near Kingstree. At Snow’s Island, Doyle and his troops destroyed the camp and remaining supplies. Read more about this thrilling event in A Bitter Spring for Snow: The Raid On Snow’s Island, March 27, 1781, a Historyman comic by Eric Barnes and Rick Emond in collaboration with the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission.
