South Carolina 250 Commemoration and Black History Month

As part of the South Carolina 250 commemoration and Black History Month, this display case examines the complex relationship between Revolutionary ideals and the realities of slavery in South Carolina.

Focusing on John Laurens’ efforts to recruit enslaved individuals for military service in exchange for freedom, the exhibit highlights how Black military service and the fight for liberty were central to the state’s Revolutionary history, even when those efforts were ultimately rejected.
