SC Plants the Seed: A Fresh Chapter Begins

SC Plants the Seed (SCPTS) is a library-based initiative that weaves together literacy, nutrition education, and access to healthy food, all while promoting lifelong learning and healthier communities. Through a dynamic collaboration between public libraries and multiple state agencies, this program empowers low-income families with the knowledge and resources to make nutritious food choices and it fosters a love of reading by providing free books to children.

Originally launched in 2017 with Orangeburg County Public Library, Lexington County Public Library, and Lee County Public Library, SCPTS began as a visionary pilot project. These founding libraries played a pivotal role in shaping the program and contributed significantly to the development of the resources and tools used today.

At the heart of SCPTS is the belief that people make better choices when they understand where their food comes from, how it grows, and how to prepare it. By connecting library patrons with local farmers and hands-on food education, the program not only encourages healthier lifestyles, but also strengthens the local food economy in a sustainable and inclusive way.

Each SCPTS event offers families a chance to purchase fresh, locally grown produce from farmers, farmers markets or FoodShare; participate in engaging nutrition activities; and choose a free book for each child to take home. Families using SNAP benefits who spend at least $5.00 receive an additional $15.00 in Healthy Bucks, an incentive that supports both household food security and local agriculture.

Institute of Museum and Library Sciences logoThis project is made possible by a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the South Carolina State Library. The program is administered through a joint partnership between the South Carolina State Library, USC SNAP-Ed, Clemson SNAP-Ed, Lowcountry Food Bank, and the South Carolina Department of Public Health. Together, these organizations support South Carolina’s public libraries in planning and delivering successful SCPTS events in their communities.

Now, with the launch of SCPTS 2.0, we are thrilled to welcome ten more library systems into this growing initiative: Allendale, Hampton, Jasper, Barnwell, Chester, Clarendon, Laurens, Orangeburg, Saluda, and Union County public libraries.

We are incredibly excited about this new chapter. SC Plants the Seed 2.0 represents more than a relaunch – it is a reinvestment in our communities, our families, and our future. With every story read and every seed planted, we are cultivating curiosity, connection, and healthier lives across South Carolina.
