Check Out SC is a partnership between the South Carolina State Library and South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism (SCPRT) that encourages South Carolinians to explore the outdoors and take advantage of the many benefits of spending time in nature.
Through the Check Out SC program, participating public libraries provide park passes that offer free day-entry admission to all South Carolina state parks, giving patrons the opportunity to discover the state’s natural beauty, enjoy outdoor recreation, and create lasting memories with family and friends.
Cataloguing and Check Out Procedure Recommendations
Circulation
How long is the circulation period for the backpacks/passes?
We recommend a 7-day circulation period; however, each library may establish the loan period that best meets the needs of its community and aligns with local circulation policies.
Can we, or do we have to, allow holds on the park passes?
Libraries may decide whether or not to allow holds on park passes. Please follow your library’s local circulation policies and procedures when determining how to manage holds.
Can we charge an overdue fine if a park pass isn’t returned on time? If so, how much?
Yes. Libraries may charge overdue fines for park passes in accordance with their local circulation policies. Each library may determine the appropriate fine amount and procedures for managing overdue passes.
May we charge our patrons for replacement costs of lost or damaged passes?
Yes. Libraries may charge patrons for the replacement cost of a lost or damaged park pass in accordance with their local policies. If you plan to replace the pass, the South Carolina State Library may have replacement passes available. Please contact the State Library to inquire about availability.
Processing
May our library add a barcode and/or our library name, logo, and/or address to the park pass?
Yes. This is recommended. The park passes are part of your library's permanent collection, and we encourage you to process and label them in the way that best supports your local circulation and tracking procedures.
Is a cataloging record available?
Yes. The OCLC record number is 1141870296. Non-SCLENDS libraries may make any local modifications needed after importing the record into their catalog. If you have questions about cataloging, please contact Sarah Pettus at spettus@statelibrary.sc.gov.
Lost or Damaged Park Pass
What if the park pass gets damaged or lost?
Please contact Jennifer Jean at jjean@statelibrary.sc.gov if a park pass is lost or damaged. Replacement passes may be available through the South Carolina State Library. If a replacement is not available, your library may be responsible for purchasing a new pass.
