Job Description

Under general supervision, must be mentally and physically capable of assisting Children’s Service Manager in all aspects of department operations  Develops and presents children’s programming; provides reference and reader’s advisory service  Reports to the Children’s Service Manager.

Position works in the Children's Department at the Florence Library.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Schedules, plans and conducts library activities for children, including reading programs and story hours, seasonal and after-school programs.

Assists children and parents in the use of library resources and equipment.

Provides reference and reader advisory services for clients.

Maintains the collection through regular examination, organization and periodic weeding.

Makes recommendations of children’s literature for the children’s collections.

Promotes Library programs, resources and services through the development of bibliographic materials, reading lists, brochures, book reviews, news releases and other materials.  Assembles brochures and packets; conducts library tours.  Creates displays and maintains a pleasant, inviting environment in the children’s library.

Assists in supervising the daily activities of Library Assistants, Pages and volunteers as assigned.

Performs computer data entry to record and retrieve various information and to prepare documents and correspondence.

Shelves books, periodicals and newspapers; weeds collections; repairs damaged books; moves furniture and equipment as needed.

Performs various clerical and administrative duties as necessary, including typing, copying, filing, answering the telephone, etc.

Attends meetings, workshops and conferences as deemed necessary.

Works evenings and weekends as required.

Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various reports and documents, including statistical reports, bibliographies, book reviews, news releases, program schedules, program reports, correspondence, etc.

Interacts and communicates with the immediate supervisor, Library Director, Chief of Headquarters Library Services, co-workers, subordinates, volunteers, community groups, patrons, teachers, parents, and the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle and utilizes various types of office and other equipment including computers, printers, Horizon Circulation system, copiers, microfilm reader/printer, audio-visual equipment, calculator, fax machine, typewriter, telephone, laminator, etc.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

Performs related duties as required.  The Florence County Library System may change assigned work location and schedule of any position depending upon the needs of the system. $14.49 Hourly

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or education-related field and demonstrated ability to work with the public or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.   Must possess valid South Carolina state driver’s license.
