Grand Opening of New Hanahan Branch Library

The Berkeley County Library System and Berkeley County Government invite county residents to celebrate the grand opening of the Hanahan Library in its new location, 1216 Murray Court on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. The new 6,700 square foot Hanahan Library replaces the old branch located at in the Yeaman's Hall Plaza on Yeaman's Hall Road. Berkeley County Government's Capital Improvement fund made this building project possible.

Mr. Dan Davis, County Supervisor, said "A new library in Hanahan has been needed for a long time. The library has been located in less than ideal, not easily accessible locations. Berkeley County Council was committed to making this new library a reality. It is a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility with plenty of parking. In just a few short weeks it will be available to the residents of Hanahan and the county. Council believes that libraries remain invaluable and essential community resources. In fact, a study released by the Pew Research Center in December 2013 stated 'Americans strongly value the role of public libraries in their communities, both for providing access to materials and resources and for promoting literacy and improving the overall quality of life.'"

Some of the new library's features include:

• 20 computers and 3 laptops for public use
• Wireless internet access
• 30-plus parking spaces
• Children's story time area
• Separate room for teens
• One-point checkout and reference service
• Special computer areas for children and teens
• Community meeting space and kitchen area
• One small conference room and two study rooms

Davis, Berkeley County Supervisor; Philip Farley, Councilman; Dr. Patricia Richards, Library Board of Trustees Chairperson; and Donna Osborne Worden, Library Director.
