Job Description

The Spartanburg County Public Library System is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the Colelction Development Libarian position. If successful, essential job functions will include:

  • Will perform selection of materials in a variety of traditional and emerging formats for Children and Teen collections including digital content, video games and graphic novels
  • Will work closely with Director of Children’s Services and Director of Teen Services in selection of materials
  • Analyzes community and library data to inform collection development decisions
  • Evaluates, weeds and sorts Children’s and Teen collection for repair, replacement or bindery on a monthly basis
  • Maintains budget for assigned collection areas
  • Evaluates new products such as databases, emerging formats and streaming platforms
  • Organizes, tracks and generally maintains vendors contracts
  • Manages floating collections
  • Participates in collection development projects
  • Evaluates gifts and donations and patron requests for purchases
  • Assists Director of Collection Management with departmental activities
  • Works public service desks which may include reference, audio-visual, circulation, children’s and branches

Location:
Headquarters Library

Hours:
40 hours per week: Monday – Friday 9 AM to 6 PM

Salary:
$38,000 per year minimum

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledhge and skills:

  • Strong commitment to delivery of excellent customer service
  • Knowledge of and ability to select materials in a wide variety of formats such as downloadable materials; blu-rays; DVDs and print
  • Comprehensive knowledge of needs and current interests of library patrons
  • Extensive knowledge of popular culture
  • Must enjoy working with the public of all ages
  • Extensive experience and proficiency with OverDrive and Polaris
  • Knowledge of public library principles, procedures, materials and practices
  • Solid organizational, interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to work closely with others or alone
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience and ease with current library information technology and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to exert up to 40-50 pounds and pressure and up to 20 pounds frequently
  • Valid driver’s license required

Minimum Requirements:

  • ALA/MLS from an accredited ALA library school
  • 3 or more years of experience working in libraries as a librarian
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Collection Development. Duties must have included selection and weeding of materials.
