South Carolina State Library embraces National Library Week's 'transformation' theme!

National Library Week starts April 10, and the staff at the South Carolina State Library is hard at work making sure our facility embodies the observance’s “Libraries Transform” theme. Listed below are some of the ways we are continuing to adapt to the needs of the communities we serve.

Talking Book Services

Utilized by readers as young as 3 and as old as 106, our Talking Book Services program ensures that our library's collection can be enjoyed by all comers. This free service mails "book players" to thousands of people across the state, allowing the physically or visually impaired to listen to recordings of their favorite books and magazines. New recordings are added to the collection weekly, created by a mix of SCSL staff and local volunteers.

Natural Disaster Relief

The SCSL is offering both books and training to help libraries still reeling from last year’s widespread floods. Our facility has received hundreds of books from donors across the nation over the past six months, all of which will be used to replace library collections damaged by flood waters. The SCSL has also hosted webinars designed to help librarians prepare their facilities for future natural disasters.

Rare Book Collection

Sometimes the most special part of a library’s holdings is what you can’t check out and take home. Our rare book collection includes a variety of historically significant works, including centuries old encyclopedia sets, natural history publications, and theatrical plays. This archival program is one of several services the SCSL provides to make sure our state’s heritage remains preserved in perpetuity.
