Laurens County Library to hold Ribbon Cutting for New Harmonies

The Laurens County Library announces the Grand Opening/Ribbon-Cutting of NEW HARMONIES: Celebrating American Roots Music. The Celebration will be held at 3 PM on October 30, at the Laurens County Library.

New Harmonies has been made possible at the Laurens County Library by the Humanities Council of South Carolina. New Harmonies is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.


Local, state, and federal government officials, business and community leaders, supporters of the arts and the Laurens County Library are all invited as is the general public. The press/media is invited also.

Entertainment will be provided by the Shape-Note Choir from the Smyrna AME Church in Waterloo.

The New Harmonies exhibit will feature 800 square feet of Smithsonian Displays that will tell the story of music in America. The library will also have companion displays about South Carolinians who have made their mark on the music industry as well as Laurens County natives Reverend Gary Davis, Pink Anderson, and Arthur Smith.

The Library will also hold music programs while the exhibit is in town:

November 3, John Thomas Fowler will present "The Birth of Song in South Carolina"

November 12, Daryle Ryce presents "Jazz, Folk, Blues and More"

November 17, Hunter Holmes presents "Laurens Blues Legacy"

December 1, John Jeter presents "Anything Can Happen in the Music Business"

December 8, David Gillespie presents "History of the Banjo and Authentic Mountain Music"
