The Assistant Librarian for Reference and Learning Services is a multifaceted, student-centered role designed for a small, collaborative academic environment. This position leads the library’s instructional program and provides comprehensive reference support for students, faculty, and staff. As a core member of a small team, the successful candidate will bridge traditional library services – including circulation and collection maintenance – with emerging digital literacies to ensure all learners can navigate a complex information landscape. Major Areas of Responsibility: 1. Instruction and Information Literacy • Design and deliver engaging library instruction sessions across all academic disciplines, utilizing the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy • Support emerging AI literacy initiatives by helping students critically evaluate AI generated content and understand ethical implications of generative tools. • Create and maintain asynchronous learning tools, such as research guides (LibGuides) and modules embedded within the college’s Learning Management System (LMS). • Collaborate with faculty to reach out to departments and integrate library resources into course assignments. 2. Reference and Research Support • Provide impromptu and scheduled research consultations in person, via phone, and trough virtual platforms. • Assist users in locating, evaluating, and effectively using both print and electronic resources. • Explain and demonstrate the use of reference resources and library equipment. 3. Digital Presence and Systems Support • Manage day-to-day maintenance of the library website and digital instructional tools. • Record and review statistics related to library instruction and research support to document library services and support assessment activities. • Ensure digital instructional materials meet current accessibility standards. 4. General Operations and Teamwork • As part of a collaborative library team, contribute to public services by providing virtual reference support (such as LibChat) and occasional backup assistance at the circulation desk as needed. • Assist in identifying and acquiring print and electronic resources that align with the curriculum. • Participate in the physical maintenance of the collection and assist in supervising or training library interns. • Contribute to library outreach and engagement through occasional, small-scale activities and support as needed. Qualifications and Requirements: Education: Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA accredited program. Technical Skills: Proficiency with Library Management Systems (ex: Alma) and Springshare/LibGuides. Familiarity with creative tools (ex: Canva) for developing instructional media is a plus. Adaptability: Must be flexible and willing to learn new skills in a rapidly changing information environment. Physical Requirements: The library is a two-story facility with no elevator. The candidate must be able to move between floors regularly to assist patrons and manage collections. Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and stand for various periods, as well as the manual dexterity to handle paper documents and operate computers. Schedule: Flexibility to work an occasional evening or weekend to accommodate the instructional calendar.
MLIS or MLS; at least one year experience in teaching classes information literacy and research skills as well as assisting patrons with reference questions.
