Job Description

Leads and directs the county libraries’ services to children, teens, and caregivers.  Coordinates initiatives and supports branch staff in providing high quality youth programming and resources. Advises on system-level initiatives such as policy and procedure development, and strategic planning. Responsible for allocation of library resources for youth services, to include budgeting and grants. Serves as liaison to local educational organizations.  

  • Leads youth services by ensuring that staff receive the necessary support and training to achieve youth services goals. Provides mentoring, observation, coaching, and direction to staff. Analyzes the risks and future impact of all decisions. Encourages efficiency and organization on departmental, branch, and system levels. Shares information and resources among branches. Unifies youth services staff to promote internal and external communication and advocacy; fosters collaboration and teamwork on departmental, branch, and system levels; and ensure standard of excellence in programs and services.
  • Coordinates youth programming for the library system including literacy, advocacy, technology literacy, and life long learning. Manages systemwide youth services initiatives. Develops and evaluates literacy programs for the library system to further the library’s mission and objectives. Identifies professional presenters and negotiates scope of program. Works with other departments to market youth services initiatives and to coordinate outreach services to the community.
  • Evaluates youth services resources, programs, and procedures. Analyzes service trends and coordinates recommended changes.  Compiles data for statistical reports as required.  Develops budget for Youth Services initiatives, and manages allocation of youth services resources.
  • Responsible for the Collection Management and Development for all resources for the library system. Evaluates collections and plans additions and deletions based on community analysis and usage trends. Community analysis includes researching demographics and needs of the general public, students, and local businesses. Assesses online resources on library system website; organizes resources to make more accessible and usable to the customers. 
  • Serves as system-level advisor for youth collection development, and supports and assists staff to evaluate, select, and weed youth services collection.  Provides reference services to children, adults, and staff, and refers patrons/staff to other agencies and institutions as appropriate. 
  • As a member of the Library Leadership Team, assists with strategic planning for the system to further the goals of the library. Maintains knowledge on current trends on technology, library services, and equipment through professional development. Recommends changes to the collection and services, including suggesting policy and procedures for the library system. Participates in and chairs system committees as assigned. Seeks out, writes, and submits grant applications; implements grant rewards, tracks outcomes, and reports back as required.
  • Advocates for the stated mission and goals of the library system by developing and maintaining good working relationships with the Library Board, schools, and other organizations to promote library services. Conducts interviews of library applicants. Represents the library system by serving on and presenting to various external committees and boards. 
  • Acts as the liaison between new and current vendors and staff by evaluating and selecting new vendors and managing current vendors’ upgrades and changes. Recognizes problems or situations that are new or without clear precedent. Communicates with vendors on a regular basis to ensure that staff can use their services with the highest degree of efficiency and accuracy. Provides expert and timely advice and seeks solutions for problems by keeping in contact with staff and vendors.

Salary starting at $52,518.

Qualifications

Requires a valid SC Drivers License. Requires public speaking. Physical requirements - Exerting force up to 20 pounds. Requires, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking, repetitive motions, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting.

MLIS from an accredited college or university; supplemented by 3 - 5 years of professional experience in public libraries, including supervisory and management experience.
