Job Description

Seeking an enthusiastic, community minded candidate to serve as the Reference Services Coordinator for Lexington County Public Library. The Reference Services Coordinator leads and coordinates the provision of reference services provided by the Library System. The position requires the ability to teach, coach, create content, innovate, attend to details, troubleshoot/adapt to new technologies, and work collaboratively to continuously improve service quality.

The position requires strong knowledge of print and online reference services, patron technology, collection management, project management, and Microsoft Office software. 

Responsible for the Collection Management and Development for reference resources for the Library System. Responsible for assigned budgets as allocated and the purchase of materials. Evaluates collections and plans additions and deletions based on community analysis and usage trends. Community analysis includes researching demographics and needs of the general public, students, and local businesses. Creates short and long term plans for internal budget allocations for print and online resources. Assesses resources links on library system website; organizes resources to make more accessible and usable to the customers. Selects and deselects print materials adhering to the library's Collection Development Policy. 

Provides reference services to children, adults, and staff. Researches and answers reference questions, assists patrons in using library materials, online resources, and library equipment. Refers patrons to other agencies and institutions as appropriate. Compiles data for statistical reports as required. 

Evaluates respective services, resources, and programs. Analyzes service trends and coordinates recommended changes.

Trains staff with respect to the duties and proficiences including the use of the Public Access Catalog, reference databases, interlibrary loan procedures, and public computer reservation and printing management software. Instructs staff in the keeping and reporting of statistics. 

As a member of the Library Leadership Team, assists with strategic planning for the system to further the goals of the library. Maintains knowledge on current trends on technology, library services, and equipment through professional development. Recommends changes to the collection and services, including suggesting policy and procedures for the library system. Participates in and chairs system committees as assigned. Seeks out, writes, and submits grant applications; implements grant awards, tracks outcomes, and reports back as required.

Advocates for the stated mission and goals of the library system by developing and maintaining good working relationships with other organizations to promote library services. Conducts interviews of library applicants. Conducts literacy skills training. Represents the library system by serving on and presenting to various external committees and boards. 

Acts as the liaison between new and current vendors and staff by evaluating and selecting new vendors and managing current vendors’ upgrades and changes. Recognizes problems or situations that are new or without clear precedent. Communicates with vendors on a regular basis to ensure that staff can use their services with the highest degree of efficiency and accuracy. Provides expert and timely advice and seeks solutions for problems by keeping in contact with staff and vendors.

Ensures that staff receive the necessary training to achieve department goals. Schedules training sessions to make sure staff are properly trained in online resources and technology. Provides mentoring, coaching, and direction as needed. Analyzes the risks and future impact of all decisions. Sets and meets realistic goals and deadlines. Keeps staff abreast of any and all changes.

Salary: $52,518 - $56,194 - DOQ

Qualifications

MLIS from an accredited college or university; supplemented by 3 - 5 years of professional experience in  public libraries, including supervisory and management experience.

Preferred Experience: MLIS from an accredited college or university; supplemented by 5 - 10 years of  professional experience in  public libraries, including supervisory and management experience.
