Job Description

The Director, Lineberger Memorial Library, promotes excellence in library services through proactive administration of the library in coordination with the Lenoir-Rhyne Dean of University Library Services: policymaking, staffing, budgeting, service, and professional development.

Located in Columbia, S.C., this position supports Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) and Center for Graduate Studies for Columbia faculty, students, and staff, as well as community members who have library privileges, with the provision of appropriate library resources and services. Works effectively with colleagues, staff, and student employees to advance the mission and vision of the library and the university. Operates within the guidelines of applicable laws, national library protocols, and university and library policies and procedures.

General Duties and Responsibilities

Manages day-to-day operations of the library building, services, and collections

Develops and administers operational policies and procedures of the library

Facilitates library-wide planning, assessment of needs, and special projects

Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates library staff

Recommends annual library budget and requests, monitors expenditures

Manages collection development for books, periodicals, media, and electronic resources

Oversees the hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of student library assistants

Explores new and emerging technologies that may aid in the promotion and delivery of library services

Administers the automated system, including system upgrades

Maintains the library’s website

Research Assistance and Instruction

Provides research assistance to students, faculty, and staff as needed

Maintains research guides related to campus coursework

Collaborates with faculty to promote the integration of library services and resources into the curriculum, via the learning management system or other mechanisms

Designs and delivers an information literacy program according to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education

Teaches library instruction sessions utilizing high-impact educational practices in various modalities using articulated learning outcomes with appropriate methods of assessment

Qualifications

Education: 

Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library/information science program

Strongly preferred: additional master’s degree in religious studies, theology, divinity, or another closely related discipline from an accredited institution

Experience: 

At least five years of professional library experience, preferably in an academic environment

Minimum of two years supervisory or management experience in a library, with duties of directing and administering library services, long-range planning, and budget planning and management
