JOB SUMMARY

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian is responsible for all original and copy cataloging in the Furman University Libraries. This position works collaboratively with library colleagues to ensure discoverability of library materials in print and electronic formats. The ideal candidate will be comfortable cataloging in a mixed RDA/AACR2 environment using the MARC 21 standards, LC classification, and LCSH, and will demonstrate a willingness to learn other metadata standards and schema (e.g. Dublin Core, BIBFRAME).

Furman University Libraries uses Library of Congress classification, and has a shared version of Alma and Primo (by Ex Libris) as their library services platform.  This system is shared among 55 libraries in the statewide consortium PASCAL (Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries). 

This position is integral to meeting the Library's strategic diversity goals. The successful candidate will participate in rolling DEI audits of the library's physical and digital collections to ensure materials are described using inclusive language while avoiding potentially harmful or offensive terms. 

This is a full-time non-tenure track faculty librarian position with an expected start date of August 1st, 2022.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with experience (minimum $53,000). Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life plans, and a retirement plan (TIAA). Conference and professional development support will be a part of this position.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Master's degree in library and/or information science accredited by the American Library Association.

* Experience cataloging library materials in a mixed RDA/AACR2 environment using MARC 21 standards and Library of Congress classification.

* Experience assigning Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Library of Congress authority headings.

* Experience using OCLC Connexion in the cataloging of materials.

* Experience with and/or knowledge of cataloging music scores, books, and materials. 

* Familiarity with research related to identifying and remediating potentially offensive, and/or harmful language in cataloging records.

* Demonstrated analytical and problem solving abilities.

* Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Minimum of 2 years' experience cataloging library materials.

* Experience with the library services platform software, Alma.

* Experience cataloging rare books, documents, and items in a Special Collections environment.

* Demonstrated understanding of LRM (FRBR/FRAD/FRSAD) principles.

* Proficiency in a language other than English.

* Knowledge of Dublin Core or other non-MARC metadata schema.
