Books to Celebrate Native America Heritage Month

Celebrate November as National Native America Heritage Month with the South Carolina State Library!

South Carolina owes much of its history and culture to the Native American first peoples who made this land their home. At least 29 distinct groups consolidated into four nations in SC by the time of the American Revolution, and many locations and landmarks across the state (such as the Waccamaw River and the town of Cheraw) honor their names. Active tribes, such as the Catawba and Pee Dee, continue to work together to preserve their special place in the life of the state.

Use the library’s resources to trace your Native American ancestry, discover each SC tribe’s unique culture, and more as we commemorate the past, present, and future of Native Americans in South Carolina.
