Spartanburg County Public Library Announces First Annual Fall for Reading Program

Experience the first annual Fall for Reading 2011 program at the Spartanburg County Public Library. Each month from October through December, join us for coffee and conversation with the author. Featured at these events are three unique authors with diverse backgrounds and writing.

We kickoff the Fall for Reading series on Thursday, October 20, at 7:00 pm with Dinaw Mengestu. Born in Ethiopia, raised in America, and now living in Paris, Mengestu writes with unparalleled sensitivity of the immigrant experience and longing for home. His first novel, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears, received a "5 under 35" Award from the National Book Foundation, the Guardian First Book Award, and the Los Angeles Times first novel award. Don't miss this international literary star or his newest 2010 release, How To Read the Air. Our moderator for this event is Dr. Kimberly A. Rostan, Assistant Professor of English at Wofford College.

Following Mengestu, we shift gears on Thursday, November 10, at 7:00 pm with Jonathan Tropper and his laugh out loud funny family sagas. Jonathan Tropper is the author of Plan B, Everything Changes, The Book of Joe, How to Talk to a Widower, and This Is Where I Leave You. He lives with his family in Westchester, New York, where he teaches writing at Manhattanville College. He is currently adapting This Is Where I Leave You as a feature film for Warner Brothers Studios. Our moderator for this event is Lane Filler, former opinion writer with the Spartanburg Herald-Journal and presently with Newsday in Long Island, NY.

Our final Fall for Reading author on Thursday, December 8, at 7:00 pm is Sapphire. Sapphire is the noted author of the novel Push, which became the award-winning film Precious. In July, Sapphire followed this first novel with her much anticipated sequel, The Kid, which follows the son of Claireece Precious Jones, as he navigates urban life in New York City. Our moderator for this event is Amy Wood, co-anchor for News Channel 7 at 5, 6 and 11, and solo-anchor for the interactive "News Channel 7 at Ten on Your CW."
