South Carolina State Library Showcases New Web Presence

The South Carolina State Library will launch its new web site on Monday, July 3, 2006. “Our new web site will be much more interactive – we hope it will become a virtual ‘meeting place’ for the libraries of South Carolina,” said Patti J. Butcher, Director of the SC State Library.

The new design takes advantage of the latest technological advances in content management and social networking software. Built on the open source content management system, Joomla, the web site is a content–rich resource for the state’s librarians, government employees and citizens. Features include access to RSS (really simple syndication) feeds, blogs, calendars, forums, discussion groups, and more.

"We want this newly designed site to provide more functions to librarians, library organizations, and citizens," said Dr. Curtis Rogers, Director of the agency’s Division of Statewide Library Services. “Containing information about all of our services, the site will afford library staffs a single statewide location for the free exchange of library-related ideas and issues to move libraries forward."

The previous version of the web site contained over 2000 static pages. With the content management system, pages are created on the fly, pulling information from databases behind the scenes. Information is updated in real time. The agency expects to refine the content offerings over the coming months.

The State Library has also adopted new e-mail addresses. The new addresses follow a standard naming convention, using the first initial of the forename and the surname, followed by the domain “statelibrary.sc.gov”. E-mail sent to the earlier addresses will continue to reach their recipients. The new addresses can be found in the Contacts section of the web site.  The website address is http://statelibrary.sc.gov.
