DHEC Director Dr. Edward Simmer presented appreciation coins to State Library Director Leesa Aiken and Collections and Services Director Virginia Pierce. Aiken and Pierce were instrumental in helping DHEC find information about an old gravesite behind one of its State Park buildings. The goal is to create a historical plaque honoring the site and those buried there.
This spring we kick off a monthly series on African American genealogy. Each session features a different topic to help South Carolinians trace their family history.
The Florence Count Library found a unique way to spend Library Outreach Day during National Library Week. State Library Director Leesa Aiken joined Florence County Library Director Alan Smith in welcoming children’s author Will Hillenbrand to help cut the ribbon on its new Children’s Bookmobile.
Thanks to everyone who attended Read-In 2022 in person and virtually. It was fantastic to be back together again to celebrate reading and declare that, “Kids who read succeed!” We had close to 500 students, teachers, and staff join us for the parade to the South Carolina State House, and several thousand watched online.
South Carolina students in grades 4-12 were invited to participate in the ReadSC Writing Contest. Students participated by submitting writing in either (or both) categories - Letters and Poetry. Students entered each contest in one of three levels corresponding to their grade.
The wait is over! Read-In 2022 is back on April 7 with options for everyone to participate in celebrating reading.
The South Carolina State Library is pleased to announce the selection of the most notable South Carolina State Documents of 2021. Government documents come in a variety of formats and winning categories include state agency monographs, serials, and websites or apps.
It’s here! The new image-rich StudySC website gives K-12 students and teachers a place to find curated materials on famous South Carolina people, geography, history, facts, glossary terms, and SC book awards.
York County is taking literacy on the road with its new outreach van. On February 24, Director of Finance and Grants Wendy Coplen joined YCL Director Jason Hyatt and his team to celebrate the Sprinter van and cut the ribbon, signifying its launch into the community. The van contains a wheelchair lift and roll-on book carts for serving senior patrons.
