Searching the Information Highways & Byways Classes for Information Seekers SPRING 2008The staff of the South Carolina State Library presents a series of classes to assist state agency employees with finding information. The classes will give overviews and tips on specific topics related to online searching and to services available at the State Library. Since enrollment is limited to 17 people per session, we recommend that you register early. You will receive an official confirmation of registration by email. to confirm your registration. Most scheduled classes will be held at the South Carolina State Library, 1500 Senate Street. Limited visitor parking is available in the lot behind the Library. Metered parking is also available on the streets surrounding the library. Parking meters cost about $1.50 for two hours (quarters only). A map and driving directions to the library are available. South Carolina Legislative Information Date: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Instructor: Mary Morgan Learn how to use the Legislature's web site, SCStatehouse.net, to find out what's going on at the State House. Searching in pending legislation and the Code of Laws, tracking bills, and viewing the sessions online will be covered. Grants Research: Finding a Funder Date: Tuesday, March 4, 2008 Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Instructor: Dawn Mullin Learn how to locate information on grants available from private foundations and corporations, using the State Library’s electronic and print resources. The Foundation Directory Online, the Foundation Center’s grants database, as well as grants-related web sites, will be demonstrated. Writing a grant proposal is not covered. Our online catalog, WebLion, and electronic databases will be introduced. You will also learn how to request materials and assistance without leaving your office! From USA.gov to FedStats: How to Locate Federal Government Information on the Web Date: Wednesday, April 9, 2008 Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Instructor: Elaine Sandberg Learn how to locate federal legislative, regulatory, statistical, and agency information on the Internet. Sites to be explored include USA.gov, GPO Access, Thomas, and FedStats, as well as selected agency web sites.
