State Library Looks Back on the Year in Public Libraries

A new display at the SC State Library highlights programs and events at public libraries across the state.  South Carolina’s libraries are uniquely in touch with their communities and strive to service all ages with creative programs and resources. A dozen county library systems submitted fliers and brochures highlighting programs and events they held in the last year.

Greenville County Library sponsored a party for the release of The Hobbit. Pickens County Library held a bookmark contest and a special storytime with lullabies for stuffed animals. Aiken County Library brought in a program on Charles Dickens. Anderson County Library sponsored a program on expunging criminal records and also hosted a superhero-themed party. Lexington County Library held a workshop on rain gardening in addition to a celebration of its 100th anniversary. Kershaw County Library sponsored a program on Cofitachequi, a chiefdom once located in the area.
These highlights are just a small sample of the diverse programming South Carolina’s county libraries offer throughout the state. Other programs from 2012 featured bookmark contests, special luncheons or teas, celebrations and fairs, speakers, author visits, plays, storytelling, and workshops on job hunting, crafting, gardening, and learning about ebooks.
