About SC State Documents Depository Program

The South Carolina State Documents Depository program, South Carolina Code of Laws 60-2-10, requires that South Carolina state agencies and state-supported academic institutions provide the State Library with 15 copies of their publications within 15 days of issue.

These publications are described, cataloged and classified by the State Library's Collection Management Services department. The record for each publication is added to the library's catalog, and three copies of the publication are retained by the State Library for its own collection. One copy is designated as non-circulating to ensure that one copy is always available. Two copies are available for checkout to State Library borrowers (other libraries and state agency employees). The remaining 12 copies of state agency publications are distributed to 11 depository libraries in South Carolina and to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. to allow SC citizens nearby access to these public documents.

State agencies must supply copies of their publications to the State Library for this program to be successful. The cooperation of every state agency is vital for the record of state government publishing to be complete and accountable. To ensure receipt of agencies' publications, the State Library requests each state agency director to designate a staff member to serve as an official liaison to the State Library. This individual serves as the State Library's primary contact for queries about their agency's publications.

The State Library sincerely appreciates the cooperation of all state agencies and higher education institutions in ensuring that citizens have free and equitable access to their public documents.
