Charleston Friends of the Library hold Main Library Book Sale to Continue the legacy that Cynthia Hurd Left Behind

Cynthia Hurd

On June 17, just a few days before the Main Library Book Sale was originally set to be held, a tragedy occurred just a block down the road from the library at Mother Emmanuel AME Church that took nine lives and left the Charleston community reeling. One of those killed was the Charleston County Public Library System’s very own Cynthia Hurd—a librarian who served for 31 years, and who was dearly loved by all who knew her.

Due to this unexpected loss, all 16 branches of the Charleston County Public Library System were closed for a day, and the Main Library Book Sale was postponed. As we are still mourning this tragic loss, we invite the community to join us on Saturday, August 29, Sunday, August 30, and Monday, August 31 for our Main Library Book Sale as we raise money for the Charleston County Public Library System, and help continue the legacy that Cynthia Hurd left behind.

WHO: The Charleston Friends of the Library, a non-profit volunteer organization, raises money through book sales to help fund Library services, equipment, training, materials and public programming. The Friends collect and sort donated books for resale to raise money. This branch sale is one of five book sales held throughout the year by the Friends.

WHAT: Books, DVDs, and CDs, will be available with prices starting at $1 for paperbacks and $3 for hardback books. Items include mysteries, romances, classics, children’s books, local histories, cookbooks and a variety of non-fiction topics. Children’s books start at just $0.50.
