Greenwood Library Receives Adult Literacy Grant

The Greenwood County Library received a $4000 grant to support its Adult Literacy/ESL program from the Greenwood County Community Foundation. Established in 2011, the Foundation's 2012 primary focus is on education. Grant funds will be used to purchase workbooks and other materials for adult new readers/new readers of English.

When the Greenwood Literacy Council closed its doors in spring 2011, adult literacy and ESL students lost a major resource. The Greenwood County Library began offering Adult Literacy Services in February 2012. Coordinated by Lois Strauss, the program currently has 30 students (7 literacy; 23 ESL) and 14 volunteers. The Library's program collaborates with two ESL programs sponsored by local churches as well as Adult Basic Education classes offered by Greenwood School District 50.
