Florence County Library Virtual Museum Project

The Florence County Library System, Florence Museum, and Florence County GIS to collaborate in a first of its kind virtual museum project.

Thanks to a prestigious grant of $37,422, the Florence County Library System will be collaborating with the Florence Museum and the Florence County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on a first of its kind, innovative project to catalog the museum's entire collection and make records of these items available in the Florence County Library System's online catalog as well as in a virtual tour.

For the first time, people locally and all over the world will be able to see the Florence Museum's unique collection online, making knowledge of its contents available to a larger audience. Through this exceptionally unique and innovative venture, the project's contributers hope to utilize state-of-the-art technology to not only increase physical visits to the museum and library, but also virtual visits to the online catalog and collaborating agencies' websites.

The project is scheduled to be completed just prior to the expected opening of the new museum in 2013, heightening interest in the new museum facility and its contents as well as further raising the library's profile in the community, and attracting new audiences beyond those currently reached.

This project was developed thanks to a grant of Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), administered by the South Carolina State Library (SCSL). The IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation's libraries and museums. The SCSL is the primary administrator of federal and state support for the state's libraries and is a model for innovation, collaboration, leadership, and effectiveness.
