Children who have vision or physical disabilities will celebrate the end of the state’s “Catch the Reading Bug” summer reading program with a party at 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, in Columbia.

Columbia, SC - Approximately 20 children and family members from across the state will visit the South Carolina State Library at 1430 Senate Street for the event. Each child will receive a medal and certification of achievement from the Talking Book Services program. Darien McCloud, storyteller from the Columbia Museum of Art, will share stories and songs.

“Catch The Reading Bug ” is a collaborative summer library program for South Carolina and over 40 other states. Public libraries plan activities for children of all ages to encourage them to read and enjoy books over the summer.

Talking Book Services is a federally funded program administered by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, the Library of Congress, and the South Carolina State Library. The program is open to people who are unable to read or use standard printed materials because of blindness, low vision, or physically based reading disabilities. The Summer Reading Program is supported in whole or in part by the Federal Institute for Museums and Library Services and administered by the State Library.  For more information visit the Talking Book Services web site.
