Getting organized in the Google era : how to stay efficient, productive (and sane) in an information-saturated world / Douglas C. Merrill and James A. Martin. Crown Business 2011
Getting Organized in the Google Era breaks new ground…guiding you to solutions that honor your unique personality. Smart, non-judgmental and filled with practical advice. Whether it's a faulty memory, a tendency to multitask, or difficulty managing our time, every one of us has limitations conspiring to keep us from being organized. But, as organizational guru and former Google CIO Douglas C. Merrill points out, it isn't our fault. Our brains simply aren't designed to deal with the pressures and competing demands on our attention in today's fast-paced, information-saturated, digital world. What's more, he says, many of the ways in which our society is structured are outdated, imposing additional chaos that makes us feel stressed, scattered, and disorganized. Getting Organized in the Google Era is chock-full of practical, invaluable, and often counterintuitive advice for anyone who wants to be more organized and productive–and less stressed--in our 21st-century world

The third screen : marketing to your customers in a world gone mobile / Chuck Martin. Nicholas Brealey Pub. 2011
Martin argues that a convergence of trends in consumer behavior and technology has resulted in a migration to the "third screen" (after television and the computer) in this insightful account of the rise and widespread adoption of mobile phones. Cell phone technology allows users to access content anywhere, at any time, creating extraordinary possibilities for tailored promotion (for instance, reaching consumers in a store with the offer of coupons). And apps enable advertisers to literally become part of the customer's phone. Martin deftly illustrates how brands like Lexus, Zippo, and ING have used the mobile channel to connect with customers, and Martin ponders tough introspective questions on consumer behavior and an organization's ability to pull off a mobile promotion. Anyone interested in the evolution of consumer behavior and the adoption of new technologies will appreciate the clarity of Martin's prose and the breadth of his vision. This book will appeal to upper-division entrepreneurship students as well as practitioners

The Google guys : Inside the brilliant minds of Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin / Richard L. Brandt. Portfolio / Penguin 2011.
How much do you really know about Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin? The Google Guys skips past the general Google story and focuses on what really drives the company's founders. Richard L. Brandt shows the company as the brainchild of two brilliant individuals and looks at Google's business decisions in light of its founders' ambition and beliefs.
Larry is the main strategist, with business acumen and practical drive, while Sergey is the primary technologist and idealist, with brilliant ideas and strong moral positions. But they work closely together, almost like complementary halves of a single brain. Through interviews with current and former employees, competitors, partners, and senior Google management, plus conversations with the founders themselves, Brandt demystifies the company while clarifying a number of misconceptions.

The filter bubble : what the Internet is hiding from you / Eli Pariser. Penguin Press 2011
The hidden rise of personalization on the Internet is controlling--and limiting--the information we consume. In 2009, Google began customizing its search results. Instead of giving you the most broadly popular result, Google now tries to predict what you are most likely to click on. According to MoveOn.org board president Eli Pariser, this change is symptomatic of the most significant shift to take place on the Web in recent years--the rise of personalization. Though the phenomenon has gone largely undetected until now, personalized filters are sweeping the Web, creating individual universes of information for each of us. Data companies track your personal information to sell to advertisers, from your political leanings to the hiking boots you just browsed on Zappos. In a personalized world, we will increasingly be typed and fed only news that is pleasant, familiar, and confirms our beliefs--and because these filters are invisible, we won't know what is being hidden from us. Our past interests will determine what we are exposed to in the future, leaving less room for the unexpected encounters that spark creativity, innovation, and the democratic exchange of ideas.--From publisher description.

Digital collections worldwide : an annotated directory / Michael J. Aloi, Marjorie Fusco, Susan E. Ketcham. Neal-Schuman, 2011.
You think you've kept pace with what's available in the digital landscape and then along comes a book like this. Though any printed directory can include only a sampling of the digital world, this sample is annotated and well chosen, including freely available, authoritative, and useful collections. Dowling College librarians Aloi and Marjorie Fusco and Long Island University librarian Susan E. Ketcham [an LJ reviewer] present over 1400 digital collections, organized geographically and indexed by name, subject, and title. The complete list is available on the publisher's website, accessible via a username and password included in each book, eliminating the problem of typing links. The website indicates it will update nonworking links and include newer collections as well as all the originals found in the printed text. It should be noted that the website lacks a search capability and lacks the excellent annotations found in the printed text; it is purely a list of digital collection titles with their associated web addresses.
