SCSL has set up an FTP site for easier deposit of agency documents.

FTP (file transfer protocol) is a standard Internet protocol, and the simplest way to exchange files between computers on the Internet. Like the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which transfers displayable Web pages and related files, and the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which transfers e-mail, FTP is an application protocol that uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols.

Despite its age, it is still used all over the world storing terabytes of datafiles. When it was first created the objectives of FTP were to promote sharing of files and documents, to encourage transfer from computer to computer, to shield a user from variations in file storage systems among hosts, and to transfer data reliably and efficiently.

We will use FTP to allow all South Carolina state agencies to post documents of any size quickly and easily, without having to use any extra steps in emailing the documents to the Government Documents Librarian.

To use the site:

• Visit the Depository FTP site at http://depository.statelibrary.sc.gov
• Choose your agency folder.
• Enter the Username and Password (contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for agency username and password)
• Upload your documents.

All agencies should send 15 print copies or an electronic copy of all documents produced by agency staff for retention in the State Library and (if print) for distribution to the State Documents Depository Libraries (See SC Code 60-2-10).
