Job Description

The Librarian I Local & State History is located at the Headquarters branch and is responsible for providing advanced library services to customers in the Local and State History Department and at Adult Services Department service points. This position is responsible for the development and maintenance of local history collections, providing community programming and implementing innovative ways to make the collection available to the public and may be responsible for training, scheduling of staff and act as Team Lead in absence of Headquarters Manager.
•    Staffs a public service point and provides immediate customer assistance. Performs proactive reference; answers complex customer questions about information and technology resources, including genealogy and family history resources
•    Prepares and presents programming for adult and all-ages audiences.  Prepares and presents training for staff on work-related topics (fundamentals of reference, database searching, readers‘ advisory, new technology, etc.)
•    Trains the public in the use of library resources and equipment, including online catalog and databases
•    Participates in collection maintenance, including weeding and discarding items and identifying and recommending replacement titles and new materials
•    Participates in publicity and marketing of library resources and events. Assists in creating and maintaining branch displays of library materials. Writes library-related newspaper columns. Creates brochures and bibliographies on library resources
•    Serves as a working member of councils and committees as assigned (adult programming committee, web team, innovation review team, database task force, etc.)

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in Library Science is required.

Management Preferences
Prefer experience or coursework in genealogy or family history research methods

Equivalent Training/Experience
Trainee applicants must have completed at least 75% of required course work towards an MLS and submit a letter from the Dean of the Library School that states the number of credit hours already obtained and that the candidate can complete all Master’s degree requirements within 12 months.
