Job Description

Under limited supervision, provides professional library assistance to children and youths, from infants up to seventeen (17) years of age, their parents and caregivers, at all levels of complexity on a multitude of subjects. Develops reading lists, conducts training, storytelling and book reading, coordinates and implements age-related programs from alternative sources, provides Internet and computer related training and bibliographic instruction. Selects library material for branches, provides direct assistance to patrons and performs circulation duties as necessary. Duties for this Position Provides customer service for young patrons and their parents/caregivers, including the development and implementation of programs and outreach for children in the community. Oversees daily operation of Children’s Library. Provides circulation services including but not limited to: check in/out materials, reserving items, filling holds, searching shelves for overdues/holds, provide reference services, prepare library displays, maintain fiscal responsibility with customers and cash handling, makes copies for patrons, and answer telephones. Provides direct patron assistance via correspondence and telephone. Locates information requested utilizing a variety of sources, including material from collection, State Library, and computer databases. Conducts, coordinates and promotes programming designed to assist age-related patrons to enjoy the Library facilities, with emphasis on the modality that best imparts the knowledge and entertainment that is engaging to children of varied ages. Plans, coordinates and implements Youth Services programming. Promotion and marketing of programs via distributing news releases to media outlets, preparing online and/or print calendars, bookmarks and program electronic signs, etc. Creates child appropriate materials and/or bulletin boards for display at the Children’s Library. Provides leadership for book clubs. Responds to reference and research questions from patrons, which are delivered through various means including e-mail, telephone, and mail. Instructs patrons and staff members in the location and use of library materials, reference tools, library equipment, and other needs of the young adult. Prepares bibliographies on specific subjects, collects library materials for teachers and the general public. Trains and supervises Children’s Library Assistant, staff and volunteers who participate in youth services functions. Maintains contact with peers and current familiarity via professional journals and other materials with regard to current young adult resources and techniques, and makes recommendations concerning collection additions. Maintains familiarity with developmental characteristics and issues affecting children. Complies with weeding guidelines as directed by Youth Services Coordinator, Library Branch Manager and Library policy and procedure. Perform computer data entry to record/retrieve information. Maintains monthly and annual statistics for youth service activities. Interacts, communicates and develops collaborative relationships with various groups and individuals such as immediate supervisors, Library Director, library staff, County employees, teachers, SC State Library staff, other libraries, professional associations, community groups, news media, community leaders and the general public. Utilizes a variety of types of equipment including computer, printer, fax machine, typewriter, copier, calculator, microfilm reader, audio/visual equipment, vehicle, etc. Performs related duties as may be required. Position Minimum Requirements Requires a Master’s degree in library science supplemented by one year of Youth Services experience and/or other library experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have ability to obtain Professional Librarian Certificate from South Carolina State Library upon hire. Must be able to pass the required pre-employment physical and background check. Salary Range: $38,964.64.

Qualifications

Requires a Master’s degree in library science supplemented by one year of Youth Services experience and/or other library experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have ability to obtain Professional Librarian Certificate from South Carolina State Library upon hire. Must be able to pass the required pre-employment physical and background check.
