Job Description

Under limited supervision, provides professional assistance to library patrons of all ages throughout the County who have reference needs at all levels of complexity on a multitude of subjects. Develops specific reading lists and provides guidance in the use of reference materials for all branches. Provides direct assistance to patrons and performs circulation duties as necessary. Reports to Branch Librarian Duties for this Position Provides excellent customer service to patrons, in person or on the telephone. Provides detailed reference services to patrons system wide, in person, by mail and digital communication, including e-mail. Provides circulation services, including, but not limited to: check in/out materials, check in courier delivery, issue library cards, process daily mail, provide reader’s advisory services while keeping current on new releases, assist patrons with computers, provide reference services, prepare library displays, run trace/claims, accept/process book donations, register voters, and daily open/close responsibilities. Evaluates existing collection and recommends materials to Adult Services Coordinator for additions to the collection. Performs circulation duties including processing new books and related materials and disposition of outdated materials. Creates local history indexes, subject guides and booklists. Supervises assigned staff, including assistants, pages and volunteers. Establishes performance standards, manages, reviews and evaluates staff. Assigns workloads and establishes work schedules, and duties of employees. Maintains standards and coordinates activities, review work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy. Address employee problems and complaints in coordination with supervisor. Trains library staff regarding use of reference materials and digital tools. Provides instruction for patrons in technology, reference materials and digital tools. Serves as a liaison with community groups as needed Interacts and communicates with Library Manager, Library Director, Assistant Director, co-workers, State Library staff, community groups, etc. Knowledgeable regarding current library materials, trends, best practices, and continues professional development. Acts as Library Manager when necessary. Performs other duties as required. Salary Range: $38,957.00

Qualifications

Master’s degree in library science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association, supplemented by one (1) to two (2) years of reference and public service experience in a public library; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities Applicants who have enrolled in an ALA accredited MLS degree program, and have completed or enrolled in at least half the classes necessary to complete the degree, will be considered so long as they have at least one year of public library employment Must possess a Professional Librarian Certificate. Must be able to pass required pre-employment background check and physical.
