Job Description

Charleston County Public Library seeks a Collection Development Librarian at its Main Library located in downtown Charleston to evaluate, select, and maintain various library collections in multiple formats and age ranges, including five Opening Day Collections for new buildings. This position reports directly to the Library Collections and Technical Services Manager. The essential functions of the position include identifying library materials for purchase and monitoring demand; tracking budget expenditures and anticipating budget needs; participating in material weeding schedules, special material weeding projects, and staff training; meeting with vendors in order to review products, services, and providing feedback to vendors; analyzing collection needs and redistributing materials; maintaining proficiency using vendor websites and platforms, the SirsiDynix Symphony ILS, CollectionHQ, and other software tools; collaborating with library staff to design and implement displays and merchandizing improvements of library material; assisting the Library Collections and Technical Services Manager with reports, interdepartmental collaboration, committee service, and updates/improvements to department procedures, collection guidelines and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Must have excellent communication skills to communicate effectively with the general public and library staff. Must be proficient with – Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and on-line ordering systems/programs/websites/platforms. Must be able to sit and use a computer for extended periods of time. Must be able to perform repetitive motions, such as opening AV cases, and have the stamina for long periods of standing, reaching, bending, stooping, shelving and shifting materials and packing/unpacking boxes and bins. Must be able to lift and move boxes weighing up to approximately thirty-five (35) pounds and push loaded book carts. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree and a minimum of one (1) year of collection development experience in a library. Candidates must be eligible for or hold South Carolina State Library certification.
