Job Description

Full time position for an energetic, creative, and highly motivated individual. Located by Lake Marion in the heart of South Carolina, the Harvin Clarendon County Library in Manning, SC serves a population of 31,000. Convenient to Columbia, Charleston, Sumter, and Florence – Clarendon County is a county with an active and vibrant community. The system currently operates with one facility and a bookmobile and, as a member of SCLENDS, has access to over 3 million items. 

Ideal candidate is one who has an enthusiasm for service to children, their families, and educators and the energy level necessary to provide services both in the library and through community outreach. Great position for a librarian seeking flexibility and community support, as well as opportunities for professional collaboration and continuing education, to implement innovative programs and services that will enhance the lives of the children and young adults in Clarendon County. Candidate must also be able to serve as the manager responsible for library operations in the occasional absence of the Director. A Masters in Library and Information Science is required.

Hiring Salary Range: $40,000 to $45,000 dependent upon experience/qualifications. Benefits package including health, sick leave, vacation time, and participation in SC Retirement System.

Qualifications

General Position Description

Under the general direction of the Library Director, this position is responsible for the development and implementation of services to children and is responsible for the maintenance of both the children’s collection.  This position also assists with general circulation duties at the library in Manning and serves as the manager responsible for library operations in the Director's absence.

Essential Tasks

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work, knowledge, skills, and abilities as necessary.

Plan and implement children’s programs, including storytime, outreach visits to schools and daycares, library tours, and summer reading activities.

Serve as library liaison to community groups pertaining to children and literacy including Clarendon County First Steps and Save the Children. 

Develop and maintain contacts/relationships with childcare and after school programs or facilities in Clarendon County. Also recommend mobile library stops to childcare/after school facilities and evaluate effectiveness of these scheduled stops. 

Create promotional materials including fliers and booklists as they pertain to outreach and children’s services as well as monitor and update youth services related content for the library website and library social media account(s).

Serve as manager of the library facility in the Director's absence. Managerial duties in the Director's absence primarily include handling customer service concerns, reporting any facility related repairs needed, and monitoring staff schedules. 

Perform general circulation duties including, but not limited to, checking items in and out, registering patrons, placing holds, collecting fines and fees, assisting with copier, print, and fax services.

Perform general reference and reader’s advisory assistance.

Shelve children’s materials and monitor the order and appearance of the children's area – maintaining a colorful, stimulating, and user-friendly environment.

Assist patrons in using various resources and equipment of the Library including card catalog, eBooks, databases, and Internet access computers.

Assist co-workers with duties as required

Attend continuing education classes, meetings and/or workshops to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must enjoy working with a diverse population and have a particular interest in working with children and students.

Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and be able to interpret child resources and services to the community.

Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work independently and represent the library in a wide variety of situations.

Must have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. 

Proficiency in the use of a computer, especially with regards to web based programs, Microsoft Office, and library-related software is required.

Must have the ability to reach, bend, grasp, stoop, stand for long periods of time, and be able to maneuver up to 50 pounds of library materials.

Work a fixed flexible full time schedule that includes some evenings and Saturdays.

Education, Experience, and Training

A Masters in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program is required. 

A minimum of two-years experience working in an educational, childcare, or library setting is required.  

Must have a valid South Carolina driver’s license and safe driving record and clear/passing Criminal Background Check.
