The University of South Carolina Libraries is seeking an innovative, experienced, and successful technology leader for the position of Associate Dean for Technology. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, this position is responsible for the technology operations of The University of South Carolina Libraries. These duties include planning and executing a strategic vision for library technology that supports the mission and goals of the University of South Carolina. As the administrative head of library technology, the Associate Dean is responsible for the management of all aspects of library computing services, technology infrastructure, Digital Scholarship, Shared Library System Platform and e-resources access, web services and application development.
The Associate Dean for Technology is responsible for 15 FTE in the following areas:
- Library computing services – responsible for the Technology Lounge; pay-for-printing; Carolina Card access; copiers; digital media; security cameras; media production development; and support for over 600 staff and public computers (PCs and Macs)
- Technology infrastructure – responsible for technical infrastructure as it applies to all aspects of library technology, including servers and data storage
- Digital Scholarship – responsible for supporting the development of new and emerging e-Research services such as data management, data visualization, and data publishing for faculty and students as well as born digital archival processing and digital repositories such as Bepress, CONTENTdm, Islandora, ChronAm, and ArchivesSpace
- Shared Library Services Platform and e-resource access – responsible for coordinating the Libraries’ transition from III Millennium ILS to participation in a statewide consortial implementation of Ex Libris Alma and Primo; ongoing management of ILS/SLSP, including authentication and proxy access, during and after implementation
- Web services and application development –responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of University Libraries multiple websites and platforms.
The Associate Dean is also expected to:
- Work with stakeholders (librarians, faculty, students, staff, Division of Information Technology, programmers, public end-users, and vendors) to identify, develop, implement, and assess emerging technology strategies and solutions to ensure that University Libraries meets the changing needs of our users
- Provide active leadership and direction for the Libraries’ technology units and personnel
- Develop and communicate goals, objectives, plans and policies for technology projects and initiatives within the library and across campus
- Maintain a strong cooperative relationship with Library departments/units and other areas of the University concerned with technology policy, planning, and implementation
- Represent the interests of the University Libraries through participation on relevant campus committees as well as state, national, and international organizations
- Plan for implementation and configuration of technology in support of library assessment initiatives

- MLS/MILS/MLIS from an ALA accredited program or a terminal degree in an appropriate field
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience leading library technology personnel in an academic research library
- Advanced leadership and management skills with the demonstrated ability to bring innovative and complex projects to completion in a timely manner
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and foster productive collaborations with all levels of the organization, University community, and external partners
- Ability to communicate effectively technical issues and solutions to a diverse set of stakeholders
- Demonstrated flexibility and initiative in a changing technological environment. • Excellent grasp of advanced information technologies and emerging trends in a scholarly research community. • Understanding of and experience with software development
- Demonstrated experience representing the interests of the University Libraries through participation on relevant campus committees as well as state, national, and international organizations. • Demonstrated experience with current issues and best practices in the assessment, development, and application of information technologies in libraries and higher education, including programming, systems administration, systems analysis. • Demonstrated understanding of security issues and the ability to collaborate with internal and external partners to address those issues
