Job Description

Full-time position for an energetic, team-oriented librarian who will demonstrate exceptional customer service as an example for all staff and build a positive team spirit within the branch. In the absence of the branch manager, this person will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations, ensuring the delivery of exceptional customer service, high productivity and maintaining high staff morale at a busy community library.  They will have supervisory duties, including compiling statistical and narrative reports, assisting with staff schedules, coordinating volunteers, supervising support staff, assisting with performance evaluation, and payroll. 

This candidate is periodically responsible for the Children’s Department, which provides library services for children age’s birth through grade 5.  Duties include creating attractive displays, developing new and maintaining ongoing innovative children’s programs, story times/storytelling, STEAM programs, and puppetry programs to promote literacy. Assists children and caregivers in use of library resources, provides reference and reader’s advisory services. Conducts outreach to and develops partnerships with community-based organizations and schools to promote library’s services and resources. Participates in collection development and maintenance in consultation with LCATS (Library Collection and Technical Services). Must be comfortable proactively seeking out customers of all ages to offer assistance in all areas of the library (desk, roving, email, phone, and/or additional methods of communication).

Must be a forward thinker with demonstrated skills in the areas of technology and innovation. Must be a strong library advocate devoted to providing excellent customer service to the community.  Must have the ability to exercise leadership and be able to motivate others to achieve these goals.  Must be able to train and supervise staff and possess the necessary skills to motivate staff to be the best they can be.  Ability to write concise reports, analyze community needs, the needs of the collection, the effectiveness of services and be able to communicate those needs to the appropriate departments and supervisors.  

This position requires broad knowledge and competency of bibliographic tools and sources, library methods, procedures, principles and practices, and emerging technology. The successful candidate must be detail-oriented, customer-focused and possess excellent oral and written communication skills; must have the ability to work well with people in a group and individual settings.  Must have the ability to follow established procedures and to perform work requiring considerable detail and carry out assignments independently.  Must have the ability to take initiative in making suggestions for the library’s services and collections improvements.  Must be flexible to assume additional responsibilities as needed to maintain branch operations. Other duties as assigned.

Hiring Salary Range: $38,833.60 - $43,763.20 annually depending on qualifications.

Qualifications

ALA-accredited Master of Library Science degree.  Prefer public library experience.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, with the ability to learn and use new methods, policies and technical advances.  Experience with SIRSI ILS preferred. Must have extensive knowledge of library principles, trends and administration; knowledgeable of Children’s, Circulation and Reference services.  Ability to create an environment that welcomes both children and adults who work on behalf of children. 

Must use tact, courtesy and good judgement when communicating with co-workers and the public.  Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Must have stamina for periods of walking, standing, reaching, and bending. Must be able to lift library materials including books, AV equipment, program materials and maneuver loaded book carts weighing approximately 50 to 100 pounds. Bilingual - English/Spanish a plus. 

Eligible for or hold South Carolina State Library certification.
