Books

Carle, Eric. The Grouchy Ladybug. HarperCollins reprint, 1996. A grouchy ladybug, looking for a fight, challenges everyone she meets regardless of their size or strength.

Cronin, Doreen. Diary of a Spider. HarperCollins, 2005.  This clever picture book weaves lots of information about the habits and life cycle of a spider into a humorous diary about a young spider’s activities, including a sleepover at Worm’s where he’s worried about what will be served for dinner. Illustrated by Harry Bliss, the artist for the Catch the Reading Bug program.

Dussling, Jennifer. Bug Off (Eek! Stories to Make You Shriek). Grosset & Dunlap, 1997. Bugsy, who delights in tormenting and destroying bugs, finds out what it is like to be small, helpless, and a victim of cruelty.

Ehlert, Lois. Waiting for Wings. Harcourt, 2001. Follows the life cycle of four common butterflies, from their beginnings as tiny hidden eggs and hungry caterpillars to their transformation into full-grown butterflies.

Bee Buzz for Kids
This site offers photos, information, games, and puzzles about bees in a kid-friendly format.

Bug Guide Net
This online resource is devoted to North American insects, spiders, and their kin; and offers identification, images,
and information.

Eco Kids. The Great Bug Hunt
Online game for 7- to 12-year-olds in which players must find the beneficial bugs in a garden.

Charlotte’s Web: The Story Behind the Movie
Learn about spiders like Charlotte (how they spin their webs, eat, lay eggs, and balloon); meet E. B. White (as a young boy and a grown man); see where White lived and wrote his stories; view White’s barn (which was the model for Zuckerman’s farm); hear White read from the book; and, learn about pigs (like Wilbur) and rats (like Templeton).

Butterflies and Moths of North America
A searchable database of butterfly and moth records in the United States and Mexico.

Alien Empire
A multimedia Web companion to the fascinating three-week PBS mini-series on insects. This site includes graphics, sound and animation, enhanced video, and activities for children.
