The State Library’s Information Services department is pleased to offer two government information classes.
Wednesday, February 15, 9:30 am -12:00 pm – Keeping Up with Legislation! This class is designed to familiarize users with following the process of legislation: using the South Carolina Legislative Research website scstatehouse.gov, using federal websites such as Thomas.gov and FdSys, news outlets, and electronic and print library resources that provide information on legislative doings. Attendees will learn how to view bills that are submitted to the General Assembly, track actions and versions; find contact information for US and State legislators and committees, and use library resources for newspaper and magazine articles and other media. Register online.
Tuesday, March 6 1:30-4:00 pm – What are they Doing? Uncovering Federal Government Websites. How transparent is the federal government? Are you interested in trying to find information on federal government budgets, expenses, or revenue? How about services and benefits to you as a student, or homeowner, or someone in need of a little help paying bills? This session is geared toward the general public and state government employees who may be finding it difficult to locate web based resources and information on just what the federal government is doing and how to contact them for information. Topics covered in this session will include: demographic information, benefits and services for various populations, workforce resources, budgets, expenses, receipts, revenue. Register online.

The South Carolina State Library’s Center for the Book, in cooperation with USC Press, is pleased to announce its spring 2012 author line up. The Speaker @ the Center program will hold free lunchtime author talks on the following dates:
Thursday, January 12 – Sara C. Arnold and Stephen G Hoffius, The Life and Art of Alfred Hutty: Woodstock to Charleston - A celebration of paintings and prints by one of the principal artists of the Charleston Renaissance.
Thursday, February 16 – Paul Matheny III and Josephine Humphreys, Palmetto Portraits Project - A rich compendium of portraits from two dozen photographers depicting everyday South Carolinians.
Tuesday, March 13 – Jack Shuler, Blood and Bone: Truth and Reconciliation in a Southern Town - A fresh perspective on the Orangeburg Massacre and its legacy.
Thursday, April 26 – Charlene Spearen, A Book of Exquisite Disasters - Deeply felt verses espousing resilience, belonging, and artistry in the face of the challenges of the everyday.
Tuesday, May 15 – Jim Harrison, The Palmetto and Its South Carolina Home - A beautiful collection of paintings exploring the beauty and strength of South Carolina’s state tree.

Berkeley County was recently awarded a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), a state program funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The award of $500,000 is to move the St. Stephen Library from its current leased location to a newly renovated building, the former St. Stephen Elementary School built in the 1930’s, located near the corner of Hwy. 52 and State Road 45 intersection.
