Celebrate Books, Literary Heritage
There's a new kid on the block to help South Carolinians celebrate books and her literary heritage. It's the Palmetto Book Alliance, an affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book.

The SC State Library and the USC College of Library and Information Science were designated South Carolina's Center for the Book in 1996 by the Library of Congress Center for the Book. During the summer it was reconstituted as the Palmetto Book Alliance. In September the organizational meeting of the advisory council was held.

A virtual center, the Palmetto Book Alliance, will partner with groups such as the Humanities Council, SC Arts Commission, booksellers, authors, libraries and the media to promote reading and book-related events throughout the state.

Four priorities were approved at the advisory council's meeting:

  • Develop a clearinghouse for literary and book events in South Carolina through a website which would also link users to other book-related sites.
  • Publish a literary map of South Carolina.
  • Co-sponsor Read-In for school children at the State
  • Help promote the public library book discussion program "Let's Talk About It".

Sara June Goldstein of the SC Arts Commission is the presiding chair of the Palmetto Book Alliance advisory council. Other members are Andy Graves, Happy Bookseller; Liz Watford, Hartsville Library; Debbie Spear, Greenville County Library; Susie Surkamer, executive director, SC Arts Commission; Bob Ellis and Randy Akers, SC Humanities Council; Helen Fellers, Barnes and Noble; Dr. Clyde McCants, Friends of South Carolina Libraries; Sue Summer, author; Dianne Johnson, USC; Penny Hayne, media specialist; Jim Johnson, director, SC State Library; Fred Roper, dean, USC CLIS; Beryl Dakers, ETV and Kurt Lamkin, poet.
